When you have teeth stains, you may be tempted to try treatment with strips and toothpastes. While these store-bought options can brighten smiles, the results are not very dramatic and don’t last. But your Dallas, TX, dentist talks about the teeth whitening options we provide to offer smiles several shades brighter!
The Factors Behind Your Discoloration
What causes stains to plague our smiles? For some, these could be due to tobacco use or drinks with dark pigments, such as tea, red wine, coffee, and soda. Our oral health habits and diet can also contribute, as a diet high in sugar and starch and poor brushing and flossing habits can allow plaque buildup to form that make discoloration more visible. The buildup is also linked to cavities and gum disease too. As part of your treatment, we will examine your smile to understand the factors behind your teeth stains and to choose the most appropriate teeth whitening treatment.
In-Office Teeth Whitening
Our in-office treatments can break up and remove stains in as little as one to two hours, so you obtain fast results before a big event like a wedding, graduation, job interview, or first date. With ZOOM Whitening, we can apply a protective layer on the gums and lips and place a bleaching gel onto the teeth, activating the gel with a light to break up the stains. With DASH, we can also use a gel to break up stains, but this is chemically activated and doesn’t require a light. For some, this could provide teeth multiple shades brighter.
Brightening Teeth at Home
If you want to undergo treatment at home, or if you have more severe staining, we could recommend a special take-home kit. You visit our office only long enough for us to take impressions of your bite and create a set of plastic trays customized for your smile. We then off an initial treatment and send you home with the trays and plastic syringes filled with a powerful bleaching gel. At home, you fill the trays with gel and wear them for a set amount of time each day, with teeth up to eight shades brighter in as little as one to two weeks. You can then keep the trays and remaining gel for touch-ups as needed in the months to come. The trays ensure even results across your smile, and prevents the saliva from diluting the gel.
